Is War Necessary To Ensure Liberty?
by Brian Woodward
An increasingly popular movement in this country is that of “libertarianism.” Ron Paul most recently brought it into the national spotlight with his token run for the White House. However instead of this movement being focused on liberty another concept jumps to the forefront, non-interventionism.This is a foreign policy which holds that political rulers should avoid alliances with other nations and avoid all wars not related to direct territorial self-defense.
However, the belief that there are barriers or certain limits on how liberty must be pursued seems to be the mantra of many “libertarians.” The whole idea of non-interventionism as well as that freedom cannot come by force, are flawed ideals to hold.
While non-interventionism can be useful and freedom may not in some cases be able to be brought by force, this does not mean that these ideals or principles should be followed in all cases. These as well as all policies should be subordinate to the main principle of liberty. This country was founded on the principle of liberty, and efforts to preserve that liberty should be pursued at all costs.
The great conservative Barry Goldwater said it best, “I would remind you that extremism in the defense of liberty is no vice. And let me remind you also that moderation in the pursuit of justice is no virtue.”...Continue Reading Click Here
Evolution: a Product of God's Design
by Brian Woodward
For nearly two centuries the debate of how life was formed has raged. Did it occur through evolution or by creation? For many the debate is a theological one. Many Christians reject evolution holding that this theory is contrary to the Bible. Evolutionists often cite their theory as one refuting the existence of God. But can one believe in a creator while simultaneously accepting evolution?
In the April 13, 2008 edition of the CBMC Fax of Life (a devotional for Christian businessmen) Charles Colson wrote a piece entitled “The Intelligence of Design - The British vs. Darwinism.” Mr. Colson is a man of great intellect but in this piece he proves himself to be wildly illiterate on the subject. His first mistake is one many Christians often make. He states, “The truth is that humans bear the Imago Dei - we are made in the image of God and are designed to long for Him.” While this statement is true his understanding of it is fallacious. While the Bible does state that man is made in the image of God, it is not asserting that we bear physical resemblance as Mr. Colson invokes in his statement. Christians understand God as a spiritual, rather than a material being. Therefore if man is created in the “likeness” of God, the resemblance is clearly not physical.
Colson goes on to claim that Darwin asserted that “we came from a chance collision of atoms, there is no purpose to life, no life after death, no objective moral law.” Darwin’s book “Origin of Species” contrary to the title, did not document the origin of a single species. Evolution is unable to account for the beginning of life. Darwin didn’t even try. He assumed the first living thing, and then attempted to explain how one living organism could be transformed into another...Continue Reading Click Here
Taxation without Millionaire Representation
by Ethan Womble
The state of Maryland has recently received a crash-course in Macroeconomics 101. Amidst a budget deficit last year, the politicians in Annapolis created a new tax bracket for the wealthiest 0.3% of earners. The new millionaire tax bracket raised the top marginal income-tax rate for the state to 6.25%. Democrats praised the new tax, predicting that it would bring an additional $106 million to the state coffers. In true Marxist fashion, Governor Martin O’Malley declared that these taxpayers were "willing and able to pay their fair share."
A funny thing happened this past tax season, however. According to the state comptroller’s office, million-dollar income tax returns have decreased from 3,000 to 2,000, down one-third!
Naturally, some of this can be attributed to the economic downturn; but much of it is due to millionaires actually leaving the state. In this case, the grass really was greener on the other side. Instead of bringing in an extra $106 million, the state will now see an $100 million shortfall from the tax bracket—at the higher rate. The millionaire migration will be quite costly to Maryland by the time all is said and done.
Other states are facing similar budgetary problems. Governor Jon Corzine in New Jersey is searching for solutions to his state’s deficit while his next-door neighbor, David Patterson, proposes tax hike after tax hike in New York. One of the new taxes initiatives, the “iPod tax,” tacks on a fee for every “digitally delivered service,” including songs, movies, and e-books. The tax would also apply to sporting events, movie tickets, and satellite TV and radio. As if paying $15 to go see Sean Penn play a polyamorous gay man wasn’t a big enough waste of money...Continue Reading Click Here
